Dining options in Barkerville are limited, but my boyfriend and I enjoyed our lunch of simple home-style comfort food at Wake Up Jake.
What’s in a name?
Fun fact: Wake Up Jake was named after Jake Franklin, one of the owners who reportedly fell asleep regularly at a table in the restaurant. As someone who naps through their lunch hour almost every day at work, I feel like Mr. Franklin and I are kindred spirits.
While the building we enjoyed lunch in isn’t an original (it’s a 1960s structure; the first reconstruction after Barkerville became an historic site in 1958) its decor immediately takes you back to the 1870s.
I ordered a delicious grilled cheese and salad..
While my boyfriend opted for the spaghetti.,
Surprisingly (to me, anyway), Barkerville is quite chilly. I expected it to be warm and Summer-like, not realising that Barkerville is at an elevation of approximatly 4000 feet. I had to dress in multiple layers (I wore almost all of the clothing I brought at the same time), and even bought myself this grey pashmina at one of the town stores.
